It is with mixed emotions that I announce that our longtime colleague, Lori Havener, will be retiring from NAACCR on October 15th after an incredible 23 years of service.
Many of you have had the joy of working with Lori and experiencing firsthand the expertise, wisdom, thoroughness and organization she has brought to all aspects of her work in the cancer surveillance field.
Lori began her career as a hospital registrar, serving in that role for 14 years before moving to the Illinois State Cancer Registry, where she held roles across all aspects of registry operations, ultimately serving as Assistant Manager. In 2002, she joined NAACCR as Program Manager of Standards, bringing with her a breadth and depth of knowledge that has greatly benefited our community. Her timely and well received recommendations to volunteers, staff and NAACCR leadership have been invaluable at critical decision points.
As Program Manager of Standards, Lori has played a pivotal role in guiding our community through significant changes, including our first forays into interoperability, use of HL7, electronic pathology reporting, XML data exchange and numerous updates to NAACCR Standards for Cancer Registries, including The Data Standards and Data Dictionary. She has also provided coordination and support to Steering Committees and the Board of Directors. Her professionalism, attention to detail and dependability ensured countless projects were successful.
While Lori's retirement is a significant loss for NAACCR and the broader cancer surveillance community, we are very happy for her as she begins this new chapter. She and her husband are already planning a West coast road trip, and we know her family will enjoy having more of her time.
