Submit Your Letter of Interest: Chief, Statistical Research and Applications Branch

The Surveillance Research Program (SRP), an integral program of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), welcomes letters of interest for Chief of its Statistical Research and Applications Branch (SRAB).

About Us: SRP provides national and international leadership in the science of cancer surveillance, and manages the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, a comprehensive population-based cancer registry system covering approximately 50% of the US population. This surveillance infrastructure benefits the public, policymakers, and researchers in understanding changes in cancer outcomes in all segments of the US population in order to measure and understand past progress across the cancer control continuum, and to help set future priorities in reducing the US cancer burden.

    The Opportunity: Chief of SRAB

SRAB provides and supports the development of statistical measures and methods for the collection, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data related to the cancer control, surveillance, and epidemiology missions of the NCI and the larger cancer surveillance, research, policy, and advocacy communities. These methods are pertinent to cancer outcomes, risk and behavior, spatial and temporal factors, genetics, and health care delivery. SRAB staff have contributed heavily utilized methods and software for the analysis and interpretation of cancer progress measures, new types of population estimates needed for producing novel cancer statistics, innovations in presenting cancer in its spatial context, and sample survey methods. SRAB provides leadership and management of the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET), a consortium of grantees that uses simulation decision models to guide public health research and priorities, including development of national cancer screening guidelines. SRAB assists in managing a broad portfolio of statistical and other methodology grants in areas relevant to substantive research areas across DCCPS. As we continue this vital mission, we seek an extraordinary leader to guide SRAB – one of the four branches within SRP.

    Responsibilities

Leadership: Shape the direction of SRAB by providing visionary leadership in statistical methods.

Mentorship: Nurture talent within SRAB, SRP, and beyond.

Serve the Community: Contribute to SRP, DCCPS, NCI, and the wider field of statistics, cancer control, and population sciences.

Lead Collaborations: Collaborate closely with SRP, DCCPS, NCI leadership, and outside organizations shaping strategies that will propel our mission forward.

Shape the Future: Drive the funding of statistical grants aligned with the missions of DCCPS and SRP.

    Ideal Candidate Would Possess:

    • A proven track record of visionary leadership in statistical research and applications, ideally within the realm of cancer surveillance, epidemiology or related fields.
    • Deep and broad expertise in statistical methodologies, modeling, and data interpretation.
    • Exceptional communication skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and influence diverse stakeholders.
    • A passion for mentoring and fostering growth within your team.
    • An innate drive to contribute to the greater scientific community and advance the field.

The location is Rockville, Maryland, close to Washington D.C. The National Cancer Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EEO). US Citizenship is required.
