JOB SUMMARY

The American Cancer Society's Intramural Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship Training Program is a transdisciplinary program encompassing intramural research in Surveillance and Health Equity Science and Population Science. The Surveillance and Health Equity Science Department is currently inviting applications for a post-doctoral research fellowship in Cancer Surveillance Research. This position will provide an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to grow as an independent researcher in cancer surveillance and health disparities. Drawing on the expertise and mentorship of scientists in the Society's intramural research department, fellows will design and establish an innovative, independent research portfolio that aligns with the Society's mission and research priorities.

The program is designed to equip fellows with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to become independent, yet highly collaborative researchers. As part of their training, fellows will publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, present their work at scientific meetings, and contribute to the foundational scientific resources of the American Cancer Society. In addition, capitalizing on the unique multidisciplinary environment at the American Cancer Society, fellows will learn skills for translating and communicating the relevance of their research findings to health policy makers as well as the general public and the media. Fellows will receive funds for specialized training, conference travel, and pilot studies involving new data collection, as applicable.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

· Conducts and supports cancer surveillance research in frameworks of both descriptive and analytical studies

· Identify research questions that enable rapid responses to emerging public health concern.

· Conducts comprehensive literature reviews; compiles and manages, and provides data from various sources (SEER, CiNA, SEER-Medicare, National Health Interview Survey, medical claims data, etc.); performs statistical analysis; creates tables and graphs; participates in manuscript writing

· Participates in the development of service publications

· Collaborates internally and externally on cancer surveillance research

· Contributes to the dissemination of the department's research through presentations at scientific conferences and media communication

· Maintain current knowledge of relevant scientific literature and present the information appropriately for both lay and scientific audiences

Position Requirements

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE

· Must have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or other related research fields

· Publications in peer-reviewed journals

· Cancer surveillance experience is highly desirable

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE

· Excellent written and verbal communications skills

· Strong quantitative knowledge and programming skills; Proficiency with SAS, Stata, and/or R

· Experience in descriptive epidemiology and surveillance research

· Ability to work well both independently and in teams

· Excellent problem-solving, organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative and multi-tasking

· Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced work environment
