    Posted 05-17-2022 01:54 PM

It is with very mixed emotions that I am sharing this job announcement with you.  I've decided to retire from the New York State Department of Health at the end of this year.  My last day will be December 31, 2022.  The Department is allowing us to hire a replacement with hopefully enough overlap to allow for a relatively smooth transition.

This is a state-funded position located in Menands, NY.  Menands is a suburb of Albany, NY.

Job description: The Research Scientist 5 will serve as the Director of the Bureau of Cancer Epidemiology and as the Scientific Director of the New York State Cancer Registry, which is housed in the Bureau. The incumbent will: formulate and coordinate the Bureau's research activities resulting in publishable contributions to the scientific fields of cancer epidemiology, cancer care delivery, and registry management; be responsible for obtaining external research funding; and promote and develop collaborations with in-state and national investigators in the use of cancer surveillance data for scientific research. The incumbent will work closely with the director of the Cancer Registry to formulate long- and short-term objectives and work plans to ensure that the Registry continues to meet national data quality standards; and will provide oversight and guidance to the Cancer Surveillance Program (CSP), which is charged with responding to citizens' concerns regarding cancer. The incumbent will supervise and mentor professional-level staff; manage approximately $3.6 million/year in federal funding for the Registry; and carry out other duties as assigned, including respond to legislative inquiries, prepare briefing materials, make public appearances and presentations, and represent the Department on national and international cancer surveillance committees.

Minimum Qualifications: A Master's degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field, and five years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Doctoral degree in one of the above fields, and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related field and seven or more years of research experience; experience in cancer epidemiology or cancer surveillance; experience working with a governmental public health organization; experience conducting analyses using advanced epidemiologic techniques; experience as principal investigator on one or more competitive grants and/or CDC cooperative agreements; experience publishing the results of research activities; experience supervising and mentoring professional-level staff; experience presenting to professional/scientific audiences; strong organizational skills; and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
