The New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) at the New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join our research group focused on cancer surveillance, epidemiology, survivorship, and outcomes research. A founding member of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, the NMTR has been a leader in cancer surveillance and health equity research since 1973. We are seeking a candidate interested in supporting a growing research program focused on leveraging the cancer surveillance infrastructure to understand and address issues of cancer equity, particularly those impacting New Mexicans and those in the U.S. Southwest, as well as Indigenous and Hispanic populations nationwide. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of research projects, including (but not limited to) analyses of cancer registry and registry-linked data, evaluating and developing programs to support cancer survivors, developing community-engaged research projects, conducting mixed methods cancer equity-related research, and supporting grant applications. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to spend a portion of their time (approximately 25%, negotiable) developing their own research, in alignment with their career goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct independent and collaborative research on cancer surveillance, survivorship, and outcomes.
Design and perform epidemiologic analyses of large population-based datasets (e.g., SEER, SEER-linked datasets, other).
Lead and/or contribute to study design, IRB protocols, grant writing, and scientific publications and presentations.
Engage in professional development, career planning, and other opportunities available to support career growth.
Qualifications:
PhD, DrPH, ScD, or MD/MPH with strong quantitative training in epidemiology, biostatistics, cancer biology, population health, or related fields.
Demonstrated experience with study design, statistical software (R, SAS, Stata) and proficiency in statistical analysis. Experience analyzing secondary and/or population-based datasets.
Strong publication record or evidence of ability to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work both independently, and as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, multi-institution team.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with, or interest in learning, qualitative and community-engaged research methods.
Experience analyzing cancer registry and/or registry-linked (e.g., SEER-Medicare) data.
Familiarity with survival analysis, causal inference, health equity, and/or social drivers of health.
This position offers the opportunity to work with a highly engaged team of researchers across the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center to address a breadth of issues related to health equity among cancer survivors. In discussion with your primary mentor, Dr. Sarah Nash, we can offer access to training in grant development and research methods, as well as career planning and local/national networking opportunities. Support for professional development, pilot research, and conference attendance is also available. Initial support is available for up to three years, with contract renewal annually based on performance.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 136 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state. And they partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home.
