The North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Executive Director. This is a full-time salaried, exempt position, with the opportunity to work remotely, or in-person in Springfield, IL. Substantial travel is required (anticipated 8-10 trips per year, including international travel).
About NAACCR
Established in 1987, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, Inc. (NAACCR, Inc.), is a professional organization that develops and promotes uniform data standards for cancer registration; provides education and training; certifies population-based registries; aggregates and publishes data from central cancer registries; and promotes the use of cancer surveillance data and systems for cancer control and epidemiologic research, public health programs, and patient care to reduce the burden of cancer in North America.
NAACCR, Inc. serves as a collaborative umbrella organization for cancer registries, governmental agencies, professional associations, and private groups in North America interested in enhancing the quality and use of cancer registry data. All central cancer registries in the United States and Canada are members. In the face of a shifting cancer surveillance landscape, in which the field is experiencing shifts in funding, operations, technology, and beyond, NAACCR serves as a leader in driving and managing this change for its member registries.
Position Summary and Responsibilities
NAACCR's Executive Director is the face of the organization, and as such is responsible for representing and advocating for both NAACCR and its member registries across the cancer surveillance system. Working with the NAACCR Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for setting and implementing strategic direction for the organization. NAACCR's Executive Director serves as the Principal Investigator for the organization's grants and contracts, and is responsible for creative fund development to support activities in-line with NAACCR's strategic plan. The Executive Director is expected to develop, implement, maintain, and oversee all administrative operations, plans, processes, and procedures necessary for the conduct of NAACCR business and activities that are in accordance with acceptable business practices and in compliance with all state and federal laws. A summary of position responsibilities is given below:
- Oversees all operations of NAACCR under the direction of the Board of Directors. Ensures that NAACCR Board oversight remains in line with best practices for non-profit governance.
- Influences Cancer Surveillance activities in North America, working with key decision makers at the NCI, CDC, ACS, ACoS, NCRA, Stats Canada, CPAC, etc.
- Responsible for driving progress in cancer surveillance across North America by providing education, support, standards, and guidance to all North American population-based cancer registries.
- Co-investigator/author Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.
- Supervise the development of emerging projects in cancer surveillance such as the Virtual Pooled Registry (VPR) and National Childhood Cancer Registry (NCCR).
- Advisor and subject matter expert on cancer surveillance to national and international associations.
- Seeks opportunities to improve cancer surveillance in North America and enhance cancer registration. Ensures that NAACCR is aware of, prepared for, and leads changes within the broader cancer surveillance environment. Seeks growth opportunities for NAACCR including novel funding opportunities.
- Collaborates with the Board and NAACCR Priority Area Steering Committees to set and implement strategic direction for the organization.
- Represents the interests of NAACCR and central cancer registries on the national and international stage.
· Acts as an advocate for cancer surveillance to other organizations, policymakers, the public, and the community at large.
- Promotes use of high-quality cancer incidence data as developed by NAACCR committees, work groups, and research groups.
- Demonstrates value of NAACCR and central cancer registries to external partners and potential end users.
- Promotes standards for completeness, timeliness and quality of cancer incidence data as established by NAACCR committees.
- Maintains liaison and cooperation with other agencies or organizations with an interest in cancer registration, control, and surveillance activities or in uses for cancer registry data. Specifically, maintains close cooperation with federal and other funding agencies. Develops novel and emerging partnerships to support the strategic growth of the organization.
- Maintains technical and administrative responsibility for grants and contracts executed by NAACCR and funded by federal or other monies. Directs creative fund development activities to expand NAACCR's fiscal support, within the scope of NAACCR's mission, vision, and values.
- Manages the human resources of NAACCR ensuring that scientific, technical, and administrative functions are performed.
- Leads NAACCR in its commitment to the process of DEI within and without the field of cancer surveillance.
Position Qualifications
- Doctoral or masters degree in an appropriate discipline (epidemiology, public health, cancer surveillance or related field).
- At least 10 years' experience in a central cancer registry or related organization with senior management responsibilities and/or scientific leadership responsibilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to write technical reports and make oral presentations to professional audiences, including medical, public health and cancer registry professionals. Ability to write non-technical reports and make oral presentations to non-scientific audiences.
- Demonstrated success in grant/contract writing and grants/contract management; substantial research experience sufficient to provide leadership and professional support to a diverse portfolio of research. Demonstrated ability to creatively develop funds to support research and/or program activities preferred.
- Experience leading organizations through strategic planning and/or change management; demonstrated ability to design and implement long-term, multi-year strategies for organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders; demonstrated ability to convene multi-agency stakeholders towards a common goal.
- Experience in non-profit management and/or governance preferred.
- U.S. or Canadian residence required.
Position Details
Starting salary is negotiable, and determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability. Anticipated start date will be no later than September 1, 2024.
