    The Iowa Cancer Registry, housed within the University of Iowa College of Public Health is hiring an Associate Research Scientist to join their team.

     

    Position Summary

    Perform cancer surveillance and epidemiologic research, maintain registry-based data tools, develop and monitor registry-related policies and procedures, contribute to funding applications, analyze data and disseminate research findings, conduct assessments of patterns and trends of cancer in Iowa, mentor students in practicums and research projects, oversee the data request process and fulfill data requests, and collaborate with researchers outside of the Registry on research endeavors.

     

    Key areas of responsibility for this position include data analysis and evaluation, dissemination of research results to scientific and non-scientific audiences, preparing research proposals and/or grants, professional service (e.g., to NAACCR or other relevant professional organizations), and supervisory responsibilities. The incumbent will be supporting the Iowa Cancer Registry's Research, Analytics, and Dissemination team by conducting independent analysis projects, supporting external investigators interested in collaborating with the Registry, and maintaining and implementing the policies and procedures related to Iowa Cancer Registry data requests and data release. They will be expected to prepare and submit first author manuscripts for publication, represent the research group at scientific meetings, and develop a recognized national reputation in the scientific community. They will create and disseminate reports of Iowa cancer trends, including our well-known Cancer in Iowa Report, and more recent Spotlight Series.

     

    Qualifications

     

    Education Requirement

    A person in this classification has the academic knowledge of a discipline generally associated with a Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics or an equivalent professional degree, i.e., M.D., D.D.S., or D.V.M.

     

    Experience Required

    Typically, 3 years of experience or knowledge performing the following:

    • Cancer surveillance or epidemiologic research

    • Data management and analysis experience with SAS, R, or STATA

    • Ability to write and prepare reports

    • Demonstrated publication record with at least 2 first-authored publications within the past 3 years

    Experience completing human subjects (IRB) new project and continuing review/modification

    • Demonstrated experience with development and presentation of posters/presentations of research findings.

    • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

     

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Data visualization expertise, preferably with Tableau

    • Evidence of effective public relations activities

    • Experience using SEER*Stat
