Happy New Year!  RI is currently working on 2 audits: low grade/high grade for colorectal cancers and ER/PR percentages for breast cancers.  We have noticed that there some of our reporting facilities are still using the old grading method of low grade=2 and high grade=4 when abstracting the colorectal cases.  We are reviewing text and fixing codes as needed.  This will be used as findings in our Annual Statewide meeting for education.  We have also noticed that the percentages for ER/PR when noted as >95% is coded to an 'R' code and not 96%.  We will be using the findings for our Annual meeting as well.

Thanks so much for sharing Nancy! Those sound like some great initiatives. Would you be willing to share your audit sample size (and number of reporting facilities selected) and number of personnel working on the audit?

Of course!  For both projects we are reviewing case files from 2018-2021 from our 10 reporting facilities in RI.  Both of these projects started in late December 2022 and should be finished by March 2023.  There are two contractors working on these projects, one on each specific project.  One staff member of RICR pulled the information from our database (CRS Plus) and used Excel to separate each reporting facility for ease of review.  Once complete, we will be able to review notes and discuss follow back and findings with each reporting facility.

    • For colorectal, the abstracts to review range from 39 to 564.

    • For breast, the abstracts to review range from 46 to 365.  This contractor was specifically asked to review only the 'R' codes for the ER and PR SSDI fields.
