    Position Summary

    Utilizes novel health informatics tools and techniques for analyzing large volumes of primary and derived health and healthcare-related data including clinical cancer data and other data sources including, but not limited to, unstructured data, pathology records, administrative claims data, electronic medical record data, biospecimen data, imaging data, genetic data, etc. for the Iowa Cancer Registry. Provide content expertise and technical support to Iowa Cancer Registry staff, other developers, data managers, and researchers utilizing biomedical cancer data.  

    Key Areas of Responsibility

     

    Analysis/Design

    • Uses novel health informatics tools and techniques for processing of large volumes of primary and derived health and health-related data including clinical cancer data and other data sources including, but not limited to, unstructured data, pathology records, administrative claims data, electronic medical record data, biospecimen data, imaging data, genetic data, etc. for the Iowa Cancer Registry.
    • Write programs to extract, transform, and analyze data based on the operational or research needs of the Iowa Cancer Registry and/or other collaborating partners.
    • Requires ability to perform most duties independently.
    • Partner with users to define functional/technical database or application specifications and offer solutions.

     

    Implementation

    • Develop, support and maintain databases that enhance operational efficiency and contribute to research, including improving performance and results.
    • Requires ability to present complex data and results of data analysis effectively, both orally and in writing, to both technical and non-technical individuals.
    • Suggest procedures and methods required to complete objectives.

     

    Support and Maintenance

    • Provide coverage for resolution of complex issues such as database failure or user/application error.

     

    Project Management

    • Conduct programming for projects including quality control initiatives, research studies, and linkage projects related to enhancing existing operational processes and databases.
    • Assist in developing work plans and time schedules for computing projects, including identifying personnel and computing requirements.

     

    Business Analysis

    • Analyze and document work processes and operations.
    • Serve as the liaison for technical staff, users, vendors and other stakeholders.  Work with non-IT staff, researchers and vendors to evaluate and improve functionality with local applications, quality of data, and end results.
    • Act as an intermediary between local staff and programming staff to complete objectives.

     

    Leadership/Staff Management/ Financial Responsibility

    • Remain current with database technologies and health research informatics methods and standards.
    • Actively participate in professional and scientific forums and committees, as needed.
    • Assist in determining needs, and developing work plans, deadlines, and milestones for accomplishment.  Document deadlines and work plan.
    • Ensure expectations are clear and documented for all parties, as necessary.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Health Informatics.
    • Experience (1-2 years) with programming, modeling and analysis of complex databases.
    • Experience (1-2 years) with SQL programming language.
    • Experience (1-2 years) with languages such as JavaScript, Python, or SAS.
    • Demonstrated ability to function independently.
    • Excellent teamwork skills (including with technical and non-technical staff) and adaptability to new technologies.
    • Ability to present complex data and results of data analyses effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical individuals.
    • Experience in analyzing health information from a variety of data sources.

     

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Experience using Postgre database.
    • Demonstrated ability to write functional and technical specifications for complex integrated systems.
    • Experience working effectively in a diverse environment.
