The Iowa Cancer Registry (ICR) is a population-based cancer registry that is one of the founding members of the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (NCI/SEER) program since its inception in 1973. In order to continue to operate and maintain a high-quality central registry, the ICR is looking for an individual to join our editing and QC team as a Health Records Specialist.

Position Specific Summary: This position assists with the performance of epidemiological disease related research, including the study of cancer, by resolving complex data collection issues; providing consultative support to participating facilities and other research sites; supervising data editing activities; recommending revisions to abstracting, coding, and reconciliation of medical information from abstracts documents, reports, and on-line data sources; evaluating policy and procedure rules and guidelines; analyzing, compiling, coding, and managing electronic systems and follow-up data; formulating procedures for obtaining and processing data; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with participating entities; training new staff in data collection and quality control activities; providing direction, assignments, and feedback to assure outcomes are achieved; serving as lead medical editor for the Editing Unit.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Medical Records or a human health science; or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in medical records, epidemiology, disease data collection, or a health registry
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
- Extensive (3-5 years) experience coordinating the processing and editing of health information records
- Demonstrated ability to function independently
- Ability to occasionally travel overnight, valid US driving license and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience (3 or more years) working in a SEER registry
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), or eligibility to take the certification exam
- Working knowledge of tumor nomenclature and classification systems, including ICD-O
- Familiarity with American College of Surgeons cancer program requirements
- Education or experience in human biology, anatomy, and physiology
- Ability to communicate effectively with health care professionals
- Knowledge of the United States health care delivery system
- A background in epidemiologic research and disease data collection methodology
- Reasonable (2-4 years) supervisory experience
