Subject: Release of CDC NPCR's XMLExchange Plus 2.1 for NAACCR v22
We are very pleased to announce that the XMLExchange Plus 2.1 is now available! This version replaces the previous version available on the CDC NPCR Registry Plus website, and the web page has been updated.
XMLExchange Plus is a tool for reading and writing data exchange files formatted according to the NAACCR XML Data Exchange Standard.
This release of XMLExchange Plus addresses programming modifications needed for creating user dictionaries for NAACCR v22 due to changes in requirements for NPCR data items.
The following six NPCR data items have been added to the NAACCR v22 base dictionary and should not be added to user dictionaries beginning with NAACCR v22. These items will not import from a v21 user dictionary in XMLExchange Plus if present since the items are included in the v22 base dictionary and will not be duplicated.

Effective for NAACCR v22, NPCR will no longer be requiring or requesting the following data items (existing data can be retained in the central cancer registry (CCR) database and extracted as needed by the CCR and CCRs can continue to collect the items if desired although the CCR will need to include the item(s) in a user dictionary for v22):
Tobacco Use Cigarettes
Tobacco Use Other Smoke
Tobacco Use Smokeless
Tobacco Use NOS
ECC Flag
Since these items are no longer required by NPCR, the items will not automatically be added to a user dictionary when a new user dictionary is created for v22 in this updated version of XMLExchange Plus. The items can be imported from a v21 user dictionary if the CCR plans to continue collecting these data items.

For more information about CDC NPCR's XMLExchange Plus, including system requirements and installation instructions, please visit our product website at the following location: https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/npcr/tools/registryplus/xml-exchange-plus.htm
The install contains a PDF version of the XMLExchange Plus Manual that can be accessed from the Help menu in the task bar. The install also contains the NAACCR XML base dictionary for the current version of the NAACCR XML Standard.
Central registries and other data collection entities with a need to create local user dictionaries are encouraged to download the application and to review the process to create user dictionaries. We also encourage central registries to review existing local data items to determine if reporting needs have changed, and to start preparing user dictionaries for NAACCR v22. As a reminder, a User Dictionary Clearinghouse is hosted on the NAACCR website to show examples of user dictionaries from other central registries and to provide the template that will help central registries gather information needed to define their own XML User Dictionary. Central registries with registry-specific data items are encouraged to fill out the Excel template available on and upload it to the XML Dictionary Submission Portal with a corresponding XML User Dictionary so that registry software vendors can get access to these required files to prepare customized software applications and to deploy their NAACCR v22 changes in a timely manner.
