SEER Program Welcomes New Cancer Registries

The NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program continues to improve its ability to support cancer research. As of July 15, 2021, twelve new cancer registries joined the Program. Coverage of the total US population increased from about 35 percent to nearly 50 percent, and representation increased for each racial and ethnic group with the new 2018 SEER contract.

The new SEER contract expands the geographic representation of the populations covered and includes twelve new registries in Arkansas, California Department of Public Health, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Detroit Regional, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Tennessee, and Texas. Illinois, New Jersey, and Texas are joining as CORE registries; the rest of the awardees are joining as Research Support registries. The map below shows the SEER Program as of July 15, 2021.

The SEER Program expands collaborative partnerships to enhance and increase data sharing and data collection through its central data management system (SEER*DMS). SEER continues to develop infrastructure to support cancer research with projects such as the Virtual SEER Linked Biorepository, which uses custom annotations of detailed treatment data to match cases of exceptional survival and controls with more typical survival.

Two federal programs provide funding to central cancer registries-NCI's SEER Program and CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries. Together, data from these two programs provide cancer information on 100% of the US population.
