    Hello NAACCR Community,

We are pleased to announce the release of the 22nd Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. This year's report was led by CDC and represents a collaborative effort from senior researchers at ACS, CDC, NAACCR, and NCI to produce current and comprehensive trends in cancer incidence and mortality.

Attached to this listserv is the Press Release for your use. The report and additional materials, including a companion Editorial, are available on our website https://www.naaccr.org/annual-report-to-the-nation/ and our partners websites.

This year we produced two reports: Part 1 focuses on national statistics; Part 2 focuses on our national progress towards Healthy People 2020 objectives for four sites (lung, prostate, female breast and colorectal).

    Highlights from the reports:

o   Overall, cancer incidence rates decreased slightly for the most recent 5 years, by 0.6% on average per year, but the trends differed by sex with rates statistically stable among men and increasing slightly among women.

o   Cancer incidence rates among children (aged 0-14) increased by 0.8% on average per year for the most recent 5 years.

o   Cancer incidence rates among adolescents and young adults (aged 15-39) increased by 0.9% on average per year for the most recent 5 years.

o   The good news is that death rates for most cancers continue to decline. These declines indicate real and sustained progress in reducing the burden of cancer.

o   However, screening rates for female breast cancer are not meeting the Healthy People 2020 target for most demographic groups and utilization is declining for most groups.

o   While screening rates for colorectal cancer also do not meet the Healthy People 20202 target for most demographic groups, utilization is increasing across all groups.

This annual report represents a tremendous amount of partnership and work by all the registries. I hope you find the report useful in terms of surveillance statistics as well as promoting the important work of cancer registries.

    Thank you,

    -Recinda
